Alan Alexander Milne nació en Kilburn, Londres, el 18 de enero de 1882. Asistió a una pequeña escuela de su barrio, donde tuvo como profesor durante un curso a H. G. Wells, uno de los precursores de la ciencia-ficción y autor de La máquina del tiempo, El hombre invisible y La guerra de los mundos. Continuó sus estudios en la Westminster School y en el Trinity College de Cambridge, donde se graduó en Matemáticas en 1903. Tres años más tarde empezó a trabajar como ayudante de edición en la revista de humor Punch, donde publicó sus primeros textos. En 1913 se casó con la nieta de su editor, con la que tuvo un hijo, Christopher Robin, que nació en 1920.Participó en la I Guerra Mundial, a pesar de considerarse pacifista. Milne fue enviado a Francia en febrero de 1916, aunque un año después dejó el frente. Pese al conflicto, siguió escribiendo para su revista, así como varias obras de teatro. En 1923 se publicó su primer poema para niños,"Vespers", dedicado a su hijo. Al año siguiente, editó un libro de poesía infantil titulado Cuando éramos muy jóvenes. De nuevo el pequeño Christopher (y su osito predilecto) inspiró a su padre la serie de cuentos protagonizados por el oso Winnie the Pooh y sus amigos, el primero de los cuales vio la luz en 1926, con éxito arrollador.Sus siguientes libros fueron Ahora somos seis (1927) y El rincón de Pooh (1928). A. A. Milne escribió novela y drama, pero su producción literaria siempre ha quedado velada por la fama del osito Winnie. El autor sufrió una operación cerebral en 1952, que lo dejó inválido. Se retiró a su casa de Cothford Farm, en Sussex, hasta su muerte en enero de 1956.
